slready heard somethin, from home, as there are siɛne of te

practical action under the Amended "rdinance of this year (vide

our letters of 27th May and 17th June), which gave tie

Government the necessary powers to deal wit: usanifested cargo.

These powers have yet to be enforced, but following

discussions between the Superintendent of the Department aon-

corned (Mr. Be-ilton), J.M. & Co. and ourselves, a memorandum

has been submitted to the Colonial coretary w ich contains

definite croposals for the presecution of the shippers of

unmanifested cargo.

minute, emphasising the necessity of Government undertaking

such prosecutions and we urged that they should go furtier

and take a hand themsleves in the detection and prevention of

the traffic.
